As part of our series of posts on iconic gadgets that will stand the test of time, we’re going to take a look at the Nokia N93 Cell Phone.
The beauty of this phone is that it straddles the old GSM standard network technology, the ever advancing 3G and also allows for the prospect of using wi-fi access to make free internet calls.
Whilst not common place at the moment, wi-fi calls from your cell phone could make serious advances by the end of next year.
So quite simply the Nokia N93 offers functionality that makes your investment a little longer lasting than it might have been. Plus you’ve got a phone jammed with cutting edge features to boot.

I pondered a while back whether there was a camera phone around that could compare favourably to a traditional digital camera.
It appears that there is and it’s called the LG KG920. If it lives up to expectations it could well become the cell phone of 2006 and an ideal gift for just about anybody.
So what makes it so special. Quite simply an integrated 5 megapixel camera.
This phone also offers the following:

We reviewed earlier this month the Sony Ericsson K800i cell phone which sports an excellent Cybershot 3.2 megapixel camera. I was a little unsure as to just how many other cameraphones were even close to matching this for photographic quality. Most of the current crop of camera cell phones seem to be in the 2 megapixel range.
However, it appears that Samsung are about to join the 3 megapixel club with the Samsung SCH-A990 which according to camera phones review, sports some of the “best photos we’ve seen from a cameraphone” however the review goes on to say “video captures looked murkey and choppy, and the camera application slowed to a crawl while storing large images files.” These problems do not seem to afflict the Sony Ericsson to anything like the same degree.
Nonetheless, it’s interesting to observe all the major cameraphone manufacturers rapidly shifting up the gears in terms of truly viable camera/phone convergence.
My money is still with the Sony Ericsson I’m afraid.
I am not a phone fanatic. All I want is a new cell phone that will primarily make phone calls without a problem. Probably of secondary importance to me is the ability to take good digital photos. Up until now most in built cell phone cameras have quite frankly been of poor quality. The technology has only really been able to accommodate a maximum 2 megapixels. Equate that to your average digital camera of 5 to 10 megapixels and you kind of get an idea of how far behind mobile phones are in the field of “convergence”.
Now there seems to be a genuine contender on the market in the form of the Sony Ericsson K800i, which offers semi good photographic quality of 3.2 megapixels and the technology is derived from the excellent sony cybershot series of digital cameras.
The only problem I have is that several years ago I ventured over to Ericsson and rued the day with all manner of problems 4 replacement phones etc etc. 3 years ago I decided to try again with the new Sony Ericsson’s that were hitting the market at that time - exactly the same result. Lots of problems, 3 replacement phones later I vowed never, ever, ever, to go back to Ericsson. So now I’m posed with a quandary. A bona fide quality digital camera mounted on a potentially dubious phone. To avoid being burnt again I decided to do some exhaustive research and thus far the responses appear to be overwhelmingly positive. Although, I did spot one review that echoed my previous problems in every way.
I think on balance that if this phone can hold together it could be superb, maybe even iconic considering the inbuilt camera appears to be a full 1.2 megapixels ahead of it’s competitors. If you know of another phone that competes on the camera front please enlighten me, because I haven’t found one.
Anyway, here’s the run down of the features as advertised by Carphone Warehouse:
