Kids….Summer holidays…keeping them busy…AAARGH!

Yes, it’s that time of year where our little angels need to be kept entertained full time. On the one hand, it’s brilliant to spend so much time with them, on the other, it can be a little trying to occupy them without resorting to the TV.

I have always been a fan of jigsaws, and the appeal is possibly down to being able to get on with other bits when the little ones are piecing together a puzzle.

The incentive is in seeing the end result, I guess. Seeing the picture in full is always a delight.

However, the Cars 2 jigsaw from games and puzzle experts,  Jumbo Toys is an another level. The 48 piece giant puzzle when completed reveals a race track for the wind up cars to whizz around!

I trialled this with my two boys, both big Cars fans. When they realised there was a working race track when the puzzle was completed, they worked together (a rare thing!) to get it done.

I let them have a play and then, rather cruelly, I dismantled it in front of them (Haaa!). They didn’t mind (promise) and enjoyed putting it back together again.

Disney Pixar Cars Wiz Around Musical Floor Puzzle is a work of genius. As a jigsaw, it’s very good. A nice engaging image on chunky pieces. As a jigsaw for kids, it is in a different league - the incentive to complete it will appeal to any age.

The best jigsaw for kids, and maybe the best spin off from Cars 2.

RRP: £12.99, Available at Toys ‘R ‘Us, Smyths, Boots, The Entertainer, ELC & Mothercare, Amazon.co.uk and Play.com

There are some board games that really shouldn’t see the light of day. When you look at the competition like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, I wonder if new board games can really cut it with the big boys.

5 Second Rule is a new board game release that I welcome. As for the big boys, this game cuts it. In fact, 5 Second Rule sits very nicely in the same bracket as one of the World’s best board games.

Seriously.

image

Essentially, all you need to do is name 3 things in under 5 seconds. Easy right?

Wrong! If you get all competitive over a board game, this will get you going.

For instance, name 3 famous Michaels? 5,4,3,2,1….

There’s loads of famous Michaels…Caine, Jackson, Winner for instance, but did you do it in under 5 seconds?

The game is simplicity in itself. You get quiz cards, a board, some counters and a really cool timer. It makes a wacky quiz show type noise every time you flip it. You start pretending you are a quiz master…well, I did!

There is a chance for players to either ‘duck’ their question or try to ‘out-play’ their opponents by using the Switch and Pass On cards, which simply adds an even more frenzied pace of play.

Under pressure, you can expect some silly answers to come out as well. This board game encourages laughter.

It is also a different test for those know it alls that succeed on the likes of Trivial Pursuit. I am normally very good at such games, but to the delight of my Fiancee I was pretty poor at 5 Second Rule!

Not that I cared, we were all having a great night.

University Games 5 Second Rule was rightfully awarded Best New Toy in the games category at the London Toy Fair 2011. Some of the company’s most successful games include Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Mr & Mrs, Smart Ass, Five Little Monkeys and The Gruffalo.

You can get 5 Second Rule from all good retailers including Argos, Tesco, Toys R Us, Smyths and WH Smiths for £19.99 (Ages 8+).

Want another question? Time it this time….

Name 3 excuses to give for calling in sick? 5,4,3,2,1….

If you still like retro game’s like you used to get on the old Sega Megadrive, then you might just like this app - Jersey GTL.  It’s such a simple and addictive game with plenty of obstacles to overcome.

Simply manoeuvre your Guido along the Jersey boardwalk and keep him rolling through a gauntlet of obstacles.  You need to dodge people, like the girls, collect items, get a tan, plus loads more!

I do recommend this app for an easy and addictive play.  If you don’t like it, then someone else will; my little boy is getting quite good at it!

You can check this out here -  http://www.medlmobile.com/apps/iphone/jersey-gtl.  Enjoy!
