Nigel’s Eco Store provides practical, functional and beautiful eco friendly, natural and organic products.  I have reviewed a few products from this great store before, and have not been disappointed!  And, now to add to their fantastic range of products and making a great fun science gift for ages 4 and over, is the Colour Changing UV Beads.

These are UV beads or sunny beads, and I think kids will go mad for them; probably setting of the next big trend in school!  When these colourless beads are exposed to ultraviolet light (like sunlight), they change colour. When exposed to UV light, the chemical structure within the beads changes, allowing the material to absorb a pigment or dye and show colour. Out of sunlight, it reverts to colourless again.

This is a fun way to educate people about the power of the sun, learn about UV rays, and learning to protecting your skin when out and about in the sun.  It is also important for kids to think about the damage the sun can cause to their skin, making these beads a more than perfect gift for them!

It really is amazing to see these beads working their magic.  When the UV beads are exposed to sunlight, and even on cloudy days, they will change from white to a range of colours, and back to white when indoors.  By two boys think they are ‘so cool’, and have brought their beads onto school to show their teachers and friends!

Simply string elastic through the beads to make an attractive bracelet or necklace; or even try making hair braids – all the girls will want them.  My boys have theirs attached to there zips on their schoolbags. And also on their shoe laces!
