Montague Bicycles (UK) Ltd (who have a pedigree in military standard bikes) are offering a pretty handy range of foldable Montague and Swissbike branded models from Montague Corporation (USA) - the world’s largest manufacturer of full size foldable bikes.

As exclusive distributors for the UK and Eire, Montague Bicycles (UK) Ltd offer a 7 model range of unique, full-size, folding bikes which fold neatly in half for easy transport and storage. I’m currently looking for a new bike myself and whilst I haven’t tested this range they look like they maybe rising to the top of my potentials list.

The Montague range is split between two brands; the original Montague brand features 4 bikes, with prices ranging from £395 to £575 and includes the military influenced Paratrooper model.

The recently introduced Swissbike branding focuses more on a ‘lifestyle’ image and has 3 distinct models priced from £495 to £1650 at retail.

All bikes are full-size, with 26” wheels and utilise the same unique and simple folding mechanism developed by David Montague, originally through an association with the US military – hence one of the models being called The Paratrooper. However, Montague have also opted to develop a less macho and more European, leisure-influenced image through the newer Swissbike branding.

The Swissbike LX, featured here, is the mid-priced model and, like all other models in the range it is a full-size bike (26” wheels) with front suspension, disc brake and, most importantly, a strong simple and reliable folding mechanism. The LX apparently has excellent ride qualities, with proper bicycle geometry and no indication of the bike’s foldability when you are in the saddle. The frame is built from 7005 series aluminium to give a lightweight package (under 30lbs) when folded and a stiff and nimble ride in daily or weekend use.

Overall this looks like a convenient and mobile piece of kit. Do I buy one or don’t I !!!???
